Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 6263 Panda Big Red Dial
The Inside Story
In the esteemed world of vintage Rolex collecting, few pieces capture the imagination quite like the hand-wound Daytona. The early models, equipped with the renowned Valjoux movements, sit at the pinnacle of collectability among Rolex sports watches. Once underappreciated during their time in boutiques, today these timepieces are celebrated not for their rarity alone, but for the sheer elegance of their design—a testament to why the screw-down Daytona stands as a masterpiece of horological art.
The allure of this watch lies in its exquisite composition: a robust 37mm Oyster case, iconic screw-down chronograph pushers, and a timeless dial layout. Each design element, meticulously crafted, culminates in a watch that many consider unparalleled in its beauty. While the legendary Paul Newman dials are a topic of storied lore, today we turn our attention to another collector’s favourite, the Big Red dial. This striking example boasts a matte black dial accented by contrasting white registers, with the name "Daytona" emblazoned in a rich, dark cherry red.
This specific example remains in excellent condition. Let's discuss all its details. As mentioned above, this 6263 features a Big Red dial, specifically a Mk4 dial, which is the second generation of Big Red dials containing no sigma markers at 6 o’clock. These dials were produced between 1976 and 1988 until the very last examples. The dial remains in good condition with light creamy registers giving a charming touch. The case is in strong and robust condition with prominent lugs and the correct Mk2 style screw-down pushers. The 6263 is highly prized for its bold and masculine Bakelite black bezel. The correct Mk3 bezel on this watch is in excellent condition without any cracks or blemishes, which is rare to encounter. The watch is accompanied by the correct 19mm 78350 Oyster bracelet, featuring 571 end links stamped AB12. The clasp might have been replaced during a previous service.
